Purpose:

The purpose of this stage is for small groups of students to focus on a single theme in a specific text.


Grouping:

For this activity, the children will be placed in groups of 5.

Resources Preparation:

Each group will be given a single text to work with.
The students will then pick a particular theme of their choice from that text and research it thoroughly.

Sequence of activities:

There are three activities in this stage.

LESSON 7 -

1. Uno's garden
Theme: Numeracy

The children will work with the following mathematical concepts:

Number lines - Increasing and Decreasing patterns
Squares of numbers
Prime numbers
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division

Strategies and skills required:-

Number skills including understanding and interpreting Number lines
Counting forwards and backwards with reference to addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, multiples of numbers and squares of numbers
Understanding place value
Understanding prime numbers

Evaluation and Assessment:

Understanding of:
Number lines, counting forwards and backwards with reference to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Multiples of numbers and squares of numbers
Place value

Lesson 8 - Spotlight on Animalia

Theme: Literacy

Activity
Students make their own Animalia-style pages using unfamiliar words


LESSON 6 - SCRIPT WRITING / CHORAL READING

MAJOR FOCUS - LITERACY and ART (DRAMA)

ACTIVITY
Groups of 3 or 4 students.
Each group will choose 1 GB book for the lesson.
The task is for the groups to present the overriding theme or message from their book.
They will write a short script from the book that they will then perform as a choral reading.
The script will either be a summary of the book or could focus on one or a few key pages from the book.
(Some) characters in the book will be the characters that they will script narration and dialogue for.
Write the script with thought as to how the performance will sound.
Perform the choral reading in front of the class at the end of the lesson.
Each group will read their script to the class.

EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT
Working co-operatively with in each group.
Equal share of responsibility.
Did the group portray the main theme or message from the book?
Class discussion after each choral reading to discover the meaning / message.
Was the reading lively / engaging / all in time?
Observe and listen to the students as they read.
